Tips for Protecting Furniture During a Move

When planning a move, one thing people worry about is their furniture being damaged during the relocation. It doesn’t take much to ding or scratch your favorite pieces, but there are steps you can take to prevent such damage.

The experienced movers from Bekins of South Florida share our top tips below:

Disassemble Furniture Before Moving

If a larger piece comes apart, you can minimize the chance of damage by moving each piece separately rather than moving the entire assembled piece.

Padding

Quality moving blankets or furniture pads guard against scratches and dings. Never stack furniture without placing padding or blankets in between and else ensure that furniture is also padded from the wall of the truck.

Wrapping

In addition to padding, some furniture requires wrapping to be properly protected. Table legs and glass tops are examples of pieces that should be wrapped.

Wrap Doors and Drawers

It’s best to remove the dresser drawers before moving, but if that’s not possible, tightly wrap the dresser to keep the drawers in place. You should also wrap furniture with doors to keep them closed in transit.

Don’t Lose the Hardware

What could be more frustrating than being unable to find the hardware that goes with your furniture? Avoid this hassle by placing all hardware in a plastic bag labeled with which piece of furniture it belongs. Then keep all of the hardware together in the same box and be sure the box label includes “furniture hardware.”

Hire Professional Movers

The easiest way to protect your furniture is by hiring professional local and long-distance movers. Experienced movers will know how to properly protect your furniture with proper packing and moving techniques. Be sure you select a moving company with a reputation for providing reliable, professional services.
